Southland Industries Awarded Martin Luther King Hospital Renovation Project
The County of Los Angeles awarded Southland Industries Southern California divsion the mechanical and controls scope of work for the Martin Luther King (MLK) Hospital Renovation project. This Design-Build project is part of a multi- phase program to upgrade the existing facilities at the MLK Medical Center Campus.
The project includes the renovation of six existing buildings and the addition of three new buildings. Buildings to be renovated include a 194,000 s.f., five story inpatient tower, main lobby and admittance building, hospital services building, and central plants #1 and #2. New construction includes a 23,000 s.f., two story ancillary building containing the main entry point and lobby to the hospital, new cafeteria, and corridors required to traverse through the reconfigured campus building. Southland will also be responsible for the design and construction of central plant #3 which will house chillers and cooling towers and central plant #4 which will house new electrical switchgear and an emergency generator. Southland will also be accountable for keeping the new and renovated mechanical systems on-line while maintaining full operation of the remaining portion of the hospital campus.
The County of Los Angeles will be using this project to test a new prototype small business and local labor program. The program is designed to encourage the construction team to foster small business development and construction jobs for the local communities. If successful, this program will be rolled out to all future county work, with the goal to eventually utilize this plan throughout California. Southland will commence work on the MLK project immediately and is slated to turn the completed project over to the owner within 22 months.
